Historical Background
The Sturmtiger was a German heavy assault gun developed on the chassis of the Tiger I tank. Rather than carrying a conventional tank gun, it was equipped with the 380mm Raketenwerfer 61 rocket-propelled mortar, a weapon intended for use against fortified positions and structures. Its heavily protected superstructure and exceptionally large mortar gave the vehicle a distinctive appearance and a specialized battlefield role. The Sturmtiger was conceived primarily for difficult fighting in urban environments and against strongpoints, where heavy explosive firepower was considered especially valuable. Production was extremely limited, with only 18 vehicles built, including the prototype. Because of this small production run and its unusual armament, the Sturmtiger remains one of the most recognizable and rare armored vehicle designs of the period.
