About Sd.Kfz.165 Hummel

Bring a distinctive piece of WWII military engineering to your collection with the ThirdParty Sd.Kfz.165 Hummel. This 1:35 scale construction-brick model recreates the imposing German self-propelled howitzer with a tracked chassis, open-topped fighting compartment, elevated artillery piece, and carefully arranged exterior details. With 767 pieces, it offers a rewarding building experience for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate historically inspired armored vehicles. The model captures the Hummel’s recognizable battlefield profile while translating its rugged form into a display-friendly brick design. Its broad tracks, angular hull, large gun shield, and open crew compartment create an authentic silhouette from every angle. The open-top structure also provides an engaging view of the interior, making the finished model more visually interesting than a fully enclosed armored vehicle. Designed for display as well as construction, this set makes a strong addition to WWII, German military, and scale-vehicle collections. The 1:35 scale gives the model a substantial presence without overwhelming a shelf or cabinet, while the brick construction allows builders to enjoy the satisfaction of assembling the vehicle section by section. It can be presented on its own or alongside other historical military models for a cohesive collection. The ThirdParty Sd.Kfz.165 Hummel is recommended for builders aged 6 and above. Whether selected as a gift, a first military vehicle model, or a new centerpiece for an established collection, it combines recognizable historical styling with the hands-on appeal of construction bricks. Please note that this is a construction-brick interpretation intended for collecting and display, rather than a full-scale museum replica.

Historical Background

The Sd.Kfz.165 Hummel was a German self-propelled artillery vehicle developed during World War II. Its official designation, 15 cm sFH 18/1 auf Geschützwagen III/IV, reflected its role as a mobile platform for the 15 cm sFH 18 heavy field howitzer. The name “Hummel,” meaning “bumblebee,” became widely associated with the vehicle. The Hummel used a hybrid tracked chassis drawing components from the Panzer III and Panzer IV vehicle families. Its engine was positioned toward the center of the hull, allowing the artillery piece to be mounted toward the rear in a large, open-topped fighting compartment. This layout gave the vehicle a distinctive profile and provided space for the gun crew and ammunition equipment. Introduced in the early 1940s, the Hummel served as mobile artillery support within German armored formations. Its heavy howitzer enabled artillery units to keep pace with mechanized forces, while its open fighting compartment reflected the practical requirements and limitations of self-propelled artillery design. The vehicle remains a notable example of WWII tracked artillery engineering.
