About S-51 Self-propelled gun
Bring a distinctive piece of artillery history to your collection with the S-51 Self-propelled gun construction-brick model. With its imposing cannon, compact tracked chassis, and purposeful military silhouette, this 885-piece set creates a display model with genuine visual presence. The design captures the unmistakable character of a heavy self-propelled artillery vehicle while remaining approachable and rewarding to build. At a 1:40 scale, the model balances recognisable proportions with an engaging construction experience. Its broad hull, robust running gear, elevated gun assembly, and carefully arranged structural details give the finished vehicle a convincing sense of weight and engineering. The large-calibre cannon forms a natural focal point, adding drama to a shelf, desk, or dedicated military model display. The build offers a satisfying progression from chassis construction to upper-body assembly and artillery detailing. Collectors can enjoy the rhythm of assembling a substantial tracked vehicle while appreciating how individual brick-built sections combine to create a cohesive and display-ready form. The model’s strong geometry and restrained military styling also make it an appealing addition to collections focused on armoured vehicles, artillery, or historical machinery. Produced by ThirdParty, this set is suited to collectors and builders aged 6 and above who enjoy military-themed construction models. Whether presented as a standalone centrepiece or placed alongside other tracked vehicles and artillery pieces, the S-51 Self-propelled gun adds scale, character, and a commanding profile to any collection.
Historical Background
The S-51 was a Soviet experimental self-propelled artillery design developed during the Second World War period. It was conceived around the idea of mounting a powerful 203 mm B-4 heavy howitzer on a tracked armoured vehicle chassis, creating a mobile platform for large-calibre artillery fire. The project used the chassis of the KV-1S heavy tank as its basis, while the oversized artillery piece gave the vehicle its characteristic appearance. The combination presented significant engineering challenges, including the management of recoil, weight distribution, and limited ammunition capacity. These practical considerations influenced the vehicle’s layout and overall proportions. The S-51 remained an experimental design rather than becoming a widely produced operational vehicle. Today, its unusual configuration and imposing artillery piece make it an interesting subject for military-vehicle historians and collectors of prototype armoured machinery. This construction model interprets that distinctive concept in a compact 1:40-scale format.
