Historical Background

The Panzer 38(t) originated as the Czechoslovak LT vz. 38 light tank, developed in the late 1930s as a modern, reliable armored vehicle. Its design featured riveted armor, a conventional turret, and a compact layout that emphasized dependable mechanical performance and practical production. Following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, the vehicle was adopted for German service under the designation Panzerkampfwagen 38(t). The letter “t” referred to “tschechisch,” the German term for Czech, distinguishing the tank from vehicles developed directly in Germany. The Panzer 38(t) served during the early years of the Second World War and was valued for its robust automotive components and consistent handling. As armored warfare developed and heavier vehicles became more common, the original tank eventually reached the limits of its upgrade potential, but its chassis continued to influence and support later armored designs.
