Historical Background
The M26 Pershing was an American tank developed during the Second World War to provide the United States Army with a more heavily armed and better-protected vehicle than earlier medium-tank designs. It was named in honour of General John J. Pershing, the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in the First World War. The Pershing featured a 90 mm main gun, a powerful weapon for its period, along with sloped armour and a rounded turret. Although it was initially classified as a heavy tank, the M26 was reclassified as a medium tank in 1946 as American armoured doctrine and vehicle classifications evolved. Production delays meant that the M26 arrived in Europe only during the closing months of the Second World War, limiting its wartime deployment. It later saw more extensive service during the Korean War, where its combination of firepower and protection made it an important part of American armoured operations.
