Historical Background
The B-4 M1931 203 mm Howitzer was one of the Soviet Union's most powerful heavy artillery weapons. Developed in the early 1930s, it was designed to destroy fortified positions, bunkers, artillery batteries, and heavily defended enemy strongholds. Mounted on a distinctive tracked carriage, the B-4 could be moved across rough terrain more effectively than traditional wheeled heavy artillery. However, due to its weight of over 17 tons, transportation remained challenging and usually required heavy artillery tractors. The B-4 earned the nickname "Stalin's Sledgehammer" because of its enormous destructive power. Its massive 203 mm shells were capable of demolishing reinforced concrete fortifications and defensive structures that smaller artillery pieces could not penetrate. The howitzer saw extensive service during the Winter War, throughout the Eastern Front of World War II, and during major offensives including the battles for Berlin and Königsberg. It remained in service for many years after the war and is still regarded as one of the most iconic heavy artillery pieces ever produced.
